Interviews
As part of the Community Advocacy Project, our group conducted interviews with several community leaders and individuals familiar with homelessness and community services in Downtown San Bernardino. These interviews provided valuable firsthand insight into the challenges affecting the community and allowed our group to better understand perspectives from professionals and community members actively involved in advocacy and support services.
One interview was conducted with Cassandra Searcy, the Deputy Director of Housing and Homelessness for the City of San Bernardino. During the interview, she discussed the ongoing challenges surrounding homelessness, affordable housing shortages, and the complexity of coordinating services for unhoused individuals. She emphasized that homelessness is not caused by a single issue but rather by multiple interconnected factors including economic hardship, mental health concerns, substance abuse, and limited housing availability.
Our group also interviewed Rick Avila, a candidate for mayor, who discussed concerns related to city leadership, public safety, and economic development. He emphasized the importance of improving community resources and addressing homelessness through long-term policy changes and increased investment in the city.
Another interview was conducted with Pastor Leon Madlock from Life Church of God in Christ. Pastor Madlock spoke about the role churches and faith-based organizations play in supporting vulnerable populations. He explained that churches often serve as trusted spaces where individuals can receive emotional support, meals, clothing, and guidance during difficult times.
Additionally, our group spoke with Melissa, a former employee involved in case management services. She discussed barriers faced by unhoused individuals attempting to access services, including transportation limitations, unreliable communication methods, and difficulty navigating multiple agencies and programs. She explained that even when services exist, many individuals struggle to maintain consistent engagement due to unstable living conditions.
The interviews reinforced many of the themes identified during our needs assessment. Common concerns included homelessness, transportation barriers, lack of awareness about services, and gaps within the support system. The interviews also highlighted the importance of collaboration between government agencies, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and community members when addressing social issues.
