Evaluation
The evaluation phase allowed our group to reflect on the effectiveness of the Community Advocacy Project and assess the overall impact of our efforts. Although the project was limited in scope and timeframe, the group was able to successfully complete outreach efforts, engage with community members, and increase awareness of available resources for unhoused individuals in Downtown San Bernardino.
One positive outcome of the project was the opportunity to directly connect with individuals who may not have previously known about local support services. By distributing flyers and speaking with community members, the group helped increase awareness regarding food assistance, hygiene services, and additional resources available through Mary’s Mercy Center and related programs.
The project also successfully strengthened the group’s understanding of community advocacy and social work practice. Through interviews, observations, and outreach activities, group members gained a deeper understanding of the complexity of homelessness and the systemic barriers affecting vulnerable populations. The experience reinforced the importance of empathy, collaboration, communication, and advocacy within social work.
However, the evaluation also identified several limitations and ongoing challenges. Homelessness remains a large-scale issue that cannot be resolved through short-term outreach efforts alone. Transportation barriers, limited housing availability, mental health concerns, and gaps in community resources continue affecting many individuals in Downtown San Bernardino. The group also recognized that increased funding, stronger policy changes, and expanded community collaboration are necessary to create long-term improvements.
Overall, the evaluation demonstrated that while small advocacy efforts may not completely solve systemic issues, they can still create meaningful impact by increasing awareness, promoting engagement, and encouraging community support.
