Implementation
The implementation phase of the project involved carrying out the strategic action plan through direct community outreach and engagement. Our group partnered with Mary’s Mercy Center and assisted with promoting the Mary’s Table program in Downtown San Bernardino. Outreach efforts took place on May 4, 2026, and focused on distributing flyers and bottled water to unhoused individuals and community members throughout the downtown area.
During implementation, group members directly engaged with individuals experiencing homelessness and discussed available services including food assistance, showers, clothing support, and additional community resources. The outreach process allowed the group to observe the realities of homelessness firsthand while practicing communication, empathy, professionalism, and advocacy skills.
One of the major observations during implementation was the lack of awareness many individuals had regarding available resources. Several people were unaware that programs such as Mary’s Table existed despite being located relatively close to the downtown area. This reinforced the importance of outreach and information-sharing as part of community advocacy efforts.
Transportation barriers also became more apparent during implementation.
Even when services were available, some individuals explained that traveling to those locations remained difficult without reliable transportation, money, or stable access to public transit. Additionally, group members observed how extreme weather conditions and environmental factors impacted individuals living outdoors.
The implementation process demonstrated that advocacy does not always require large-scale interventions to make an impact. Small efforts such as providing information, distributing supplies, and building respectful connections with community members can still contribute positively to the community. The experience also highlighted the importance of collaboration between social workers, nonprofits, community leaders, and local organizations when addressing social problems.
