Needs Assessment

IMG_0759.jpeg

The needs assessment process allowed our group to identify the primary concerns affecting Downtown San Bernardino residents and determine which issues required the most immediate attention. To conduct the assessment, our group used several methods including community observations, interviews with local leaders and service providers, attendance at a city council meeting, and research involving homelessness, poverty, crime, and housing statistics.

One of the most visible and urgent issues identified during the needs assessment was homelessness. Throughout the downtown area, unhoused individuals were frequently observed living on sidewalks, near businesses, parks, and public spaces. Interviews with community members and leaders revealed that many individuals struggle to access stable housing due to rising housing costs, lack of affordable housing, unemployment, mental health concerns, substance use issues, and limited support systems.

Transportation barriers also emerged as a major concern during the assessment process. Several interview participants explained that important services such as shelters, food programs, and healthcare facilities are often located far apart, making it difficult for individuals without reliable transportation to consistently access help. Many unhoused individuals lack reliable phone access, transportation money, or stable contact information, which creates additional barriers when attempting to maintain communication with case managers and service providers.

Food insecurity and lack of awareness about community resources were also commonly identified concerns. During outreach efforts, several individuals appeared unaware of nearby services and programs available to assist them. This demonstrated the need for improved outreach and communication within the community.
